World of Elements

Let's begin by giving a brief history on the periodic table.

It all began when a Russian chemist named Dimitri Mendeleev discovered a way to organize all of the known elements of that time.  This was a huge undertaking.  Since then, scientists have been discovering many new elements and ways to classify them.

A definition of Periodic Table from www.dictionary.com

pe‧ri‧od‧ic ta‧ble[peer-ee-od-ik]

A table illustrating the periodic system, in which the chemical elements, formerly arranged in the order of their atomic weights and now according to their atomic numbers, are shown in related groups.

Atomic number-the number of positive charges or protons in the nucleus of an atom of a given element, and therefore also the number of electrons normally surrounding the nucleus

periodic system-a system of classification of the elements based on the periodic law.

Basically, the periodic table is a big chart that has elements organized into groups and periods.
